Aspects

The Aspects are the way that the Planets interact, or talk, to each other. There are a wide variety of Aspects, but here we will only go into the major ones. There are many, many minor aspects that are also used in astrology. If you would like more information on Aspects, or on any of the tools used in astrology please refer to the Learning Center section of our site.

Aspects are measured mathematically. A Planet is said to be in "orb" of another if it is within 7° of it. The Sun and Moon are the exceptions to this rule, and can be in orb of another Planet if they are within 10°.

Conjunction - When two planets are 7° or less apart we call it a Conjunction. The two Planets work harmoniously with each other, and depending upon how close the Conjunction is, may work as one. Whatever touches one of the Planets will also affect the other. Usually the Planets are in the same Sign, but occasionally they are between two side by side Signs. This latter example is called an "Out of Sign" Conjunction.

Sextile - When there are 60° separating two Planets it is called a Sextile. This is generally viewed as a harmonious aspect because it involves two Signs that are compatible through their element. Generally the aspect includes one Fire and one Air sign or an Earth and Water sign. The elements tend to cooperate with each other, though they aren't exactly the same.

Square - Squares are separated by 90° and are traditionally viewed as "bad" aspects. They are not so much bad as they are challenging. It creates some friction between the Planets involved and usually takes more work to make them run smoothly. It is generally a more rewarding aspect than the Sextile, because we tend to appreciate the things we have to work for.

Trine - Supposedly the easiest and most beneficial aspect that occurs, Trines are 120° apart. They are made up of Planets in Signs that have the same Element. The energy flows freely with a Trine and therefore makes it appear easy. However, like the Sextile, we often do not appreciate those things that come easy for us. If used correctly though, Trines can be very beneficial.

Opposition - This aspect feels a whole lot like riding a see-saw, or that proverbial pendulum swing. One way and then the next. As the name implies, the Signs are on the opposite sides of the chart and are separated by 180°. In the best case, the planets take turns and there is balance achieved. In the worst case we swing back and forth unable to make up our minds.

Inconjunct - Separated by 150°, this is the most difficult aspect to integrate. It feels a lot like listening to someone speak Chinese when you only speak French. You just don't get it, no matter how hard you try it just doesn't make any sense. The Planets feel the same way about each other, because the Signs they are in are so vastly different. Many times, just knowing that you will not "get" it in this area can make a world of difference and help to cultivate patience for ideas or people who are completely different from ourselves.
